A follow up on the post. If you want to use the powershell, you might get errors when running the "New-WebServiceProxy"-command.
Probably you have some functions in your codeunit that requires a record-variable. And it seems PowerShell doesn't like them.
So you need to make those functions local or create another codeunit with the calling function in it that then calls your function in the real codeunit, and publish that new codeunit as a webservice.

I have a reply from Microsoft on this:
Basically, there is a walk-through on how to create XML-ports (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh166380(v=nav.70).aspx).
And with that you avoid this problem. So they don't consider it a bug and they will also not document it.

It is also a good way.
But the problem with just copying is that it does not take the original security-settings of the file, but takes the ones from the directory.
The hardlink way keeps the original security settings.

Interesting solution, but why make it so complicated? I'm just having a folder with my newest fin.flf and a cmd file with a FOR statement looking for all fin.flf files. Instead of echo'ing to a text file, I simply copy the new fin.flf to each location.

I found that code in a customer I technically upgraded from 50SP1 to 2009R2. Suddenly it gave errors on this part. I don't remember why this code was used but it gave a runtime-error. So I blogged about it.

>If I want to connect to the console, you need to create a .cmd file with the following in it: %windir%\system32\mstsc.exe “C:\…\TheRDPFile.rdp” /admin
>But this opens a dos-box that you need to close manually (maybe with some other command, it is possible but I never tried it out).

Try the following code in .cmd:
start %windir%\system32\mstsc.exe “C:\…\TheRDPFile.rdp” /admin

Hi, Kriki
86400000 is 1 day in milliseconds, right?
Why did you need this calculation?
wouldn\'t be enough just the following:
MESSAGE(\'%1\',datShipmentdate - 010180D);

ERROR: [Microsoft] [ODBC SQL Server Driver] Timeout expired state ID: HYT00

This is an error which occurs when users try to run Navision when they have logged in with their user names, and they cannot therefore use Navision unless the log on with administrator. Iam using SQL server 2005, and Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 Classic with Microsoft SQL Server.

Iam using a domain where the Navision and SQL server is installed in Server 2008 Entreprise while the Domain controller is in 2003 server.

Please assist.

Thanks for the tip. I was one of those who did not know it yet... but never changed the table for that reason ;-)

I used to change it by code:

Table.GET(key);
Table.Field := Value;
Table.Modiy;

Salut!

Hi kriki,

In addition to your trick the findfunc cmd tool will give you more power as it will provide with a list of all objects that are relevant. See my blog post: "Where Used" as simple as you can get it (http://dynamicsuser.net/blogs/vanvugt/archive/2010/02/28/quot-where-used-quot-as-simple-as-you-can-get-it.aspx).

Most of the time I also search with NDT if I have the time. Problem is that loading all in NDT takes a LOT of time.

For functions I use the same method.

For fields: if you have data in it, you can't just change the datatype. You first have to delete the data in the field. And even if you do that and then compile everything, you usually get a lot of errors because of missing automations. So not so easy anyway.

This is good trick.
I prefer to search without Developer Toolkit.
For functions: By adding a new argument and compiling a project.
For fields: By changing a datatype and compiling a project also.

Thanks for this solution, using your information I could prevent the system from initializing the primary keys with the following code ...

RecLink1.INIT;
RecLink1."Link ID" := NextNo;
RecLink1."Record ID" := RecID;
RecLink1.URL1 := Path;
RecLink1.Description := Description;
RecLink1.Created := CREATEDATETIME(TODAY,TIME);
RecLink1."User ID" := USERID;
RecLink1.Company := COMPANYNAME;

RecLink2.TRANSFERFIELDS(RecLink1,FALSE);
RecLink2.INSERT;

When inserting RecLink1 I get the error but not if I insert RecLink2 using TRANSFERFIELDS.

Thank you very much.

I was just thinking about buying the book to get a first insight into C/AL.
Of course we would only use it to experiment on the test database we have at the moment.

Well, I didn't read the book completely yet (just read the first 2 chapters). But the first 2 chapters are definitely chapters that I would have liked to read when I started in 1999.

For starting experimenting with C/AL, it is a good book to start with, but don't do your first C/AL steps it in a live database with guidance of a senior developer!

Even when reading ALL possible books about C/AL, you shouldn't start coding in NAV without some guidance of a senior developer.
Although C/AL is language that is quite easy to start with, the functionality in NAV can be as easily broken if you put the wrong code in the wrong place.

The problem is that the $ndo$shadow app role (if using standard security mode )or the individuals application role (if using ehanced security mode) is missing a required permission on each table that has autoincrement.

To perform insert specific value from CAL, NAV first attempts to set option to allow this temporarily. This requires SQL PERMISSION for ALTER on the table giving to application role in use. This is missed by NAV2009 on SQL2008 (an maybe others) This can be added manually by DBA on each affected table and then stays in place for that DB and company. Someone tell MS.

If there is some code in the OnModify-trigger, it won't be fast anymore, because for each record, NAV must fire the trigger.

If the trigger is empty, NAV is intelligent enough (at least in NAV2009SP1 but I think also previous versions) to know there is no code and thus can use a SET-based command in SQL.

If in function "modifyall" boolean parameter Runtrigger is set true will it still be fast...as i had read it somewhere that modifyall becomes as good as modify if the runtrigger boolean is set as true???

On Win7 XP mod works fine with older Navision clients, so this is an alternative.

Also the technical upgrade is available if the client paid the maintenance fee...

So the end of the world is far from now :)

First and for all: what do you mean with "split NAV processing"?
Does it mean something like having 5 users on 8 DB's instead of 40 users in 1 DB, so he needs to buy only 5 users instead of 40?
If it is this, it means that he will have 8 DB's with in each one a company that is COMPLETELY independent of the others. So it is only useful in case you have multiple companies.
It also means that it is illegal: if you have 40 users at the same time (40 users in 1 company or 40 users divided over N companies), you need to license all of them otherwise you break the rules of the licensing.

Hi, I have a client who has seen this bloc. He is of the belief that by purchasing the addtional license granule he can split NAV processing on different databases in order to reduce license costs. your comment?

We are only using the webservice of NAS. The classic client (under the form of the NAS+JobQueue) calls the NAV webservice to do some things.

The problem happens in this case:
IF (item.Picture is disabled) AND
    (use of webservice) THEN BEGIN
  -Run indexrebuild in SQL;

  -after indexrebuild job, you have this code somewhere run by a webservice.
  tmpitem.RESET;
  tmpItem.DELETEALL(FALSE); [tmpItem is a temptable]

  => ERROR because webservice thinks that the item table has been changed (NAS and classic client don't have problems).
END;

I know you have also implemented SQL jobs to call webservices (but it came too late to be used). So we started with JobQueues. But we are considering it. Maybe we switch to it in the future.
The problem is NOT overlapping. In some cases we want it, because doing everything serially would cost too much time.

Is it just the webservice or the service tier as well?
So if you run the following in a sequence, you will get the error?

webervice
reindex
webservice (errors out)? because of blob field on item table?

I also wrote another solution for scheduling instead of NAS to use sql jobs and then you can time sql jobs in sequence and they will not overlap.

You can achieve the same result from the command line (and without external tools) using the command:

runas /netonly /user:targetdomain\user programtorun.exe

Could you please direct everybody interested where to read that add-on solution tests and certification are really optional? (I´m pretty sure I read about that before but unfortunately I didn´t save the link.) Would be great to see that here!

Yes, but only if "Some Field 1" is NOT "Field 1" or "Field 2" because after the first MODIFYALL you have changed the value of "Some Field 1".

I remember I hadn't SIFT's in my test. I did have 1 secondary key but I don't remember if I disabled it or not in my tests.
I do remember that I ran the test more than once because I didn't expect such a big difference.

Thank you, kriki. With your setup and code (slightly modified (*1000 should be /1000, e. g.) I could reproduce an enhancement of a factor 2 to 3 by bulk inserts. But if the inserts take place on a table with secondary keys and sum index tables (like ItemBudgetEntry) there seems to be no significant performance improvement...

I am having the same error as above.
However, I noticed that I don't get the error when I log in as Administrator.

As a workaround, I run the Nav Classic Client/RTC Client "As Administrator"

It works!

Right-Click the Shortcut and Select "Run as Administrator"

I can't find the code anymore, but it was something like this (recItemLedgerEntry was not the table 32, but a new table in which I only kept the necessary fields: entry no.,posting date, location code,Item no., quantity. I also did not have indexes or SIFTS).

Well, I did the following test with NAV 5.0 and NAV 5.0 (SP1) under SQL Server 2008 Express Edition. And the result, I got really astounded me. I used the following code:

ItemBudgetEntry.DELETEALL;
COMMIT;
Item.FINDFIRST;
xDT := CURRENTDATETIME;
FOR i := 100000 DOWNTO 1 DO BEGIN
  ItemBudgetEntry."Entry No." := i;
// ok := ItemBudgetEntry.INSERT; // test with this line means no use of bulk inserts
  ItemBudgetEntry.INSERT; // test with this line means use of bulk inserts (NAV 5.0 (SP1) or higher, only!)
END;
ItemBudgetEntry."Entry No." := 0;
ok := ItemBudgetEntry.INSERT;
MESSAGE('%1',CURRENTDATETIME - xDT);

(instead of ItemBudgetEntry one can use an arbitrary Ledger Entry table)
I ran this code 5 times, either uncommenting the first line or the second.
With NAV5.0 I got the same result in each case, namely 19 sec (+/- 1 sec) - this is not too surprising.
Then I ran the same code on a NAV 5.0 (SP1) SQL Client and the results are as follows:
using bulk inserts: 20 sec (+/- 2 sec)
not using bulk inserts: 27 sec (+/- 1 sec)
These results are completely incomprehensible to me, and need to be checked again and again by as many testers as possible....

I think it is really the bulk insert that does it because this way the client and the server are not playing ping pong between the commands and thus not losing any time waiting for a message to cross the network.

That\'s interesting, because it could mean that there have been major improvements in 5.0 (SP1) concerning SQL INSERTs, that have nothing to do with bulk inserts...

GoIWx Hosting is a Microsoft Gold Certified Hosting company with focus on providing hosted Dynamics for partners and their clients, specifically AX, NAV, GP, CRM and others. Interesting to see someone else's notes on the NAV hosting exercise :)

Seems to be that the Item.FIND doesn't break the bulk inserts, so I changed the test. If I replace the ItemBudgetEntry.FIND by ok := ItemBudgetEntry.FIND, I get indeed a slight performance enhancement of about 20 to 25 % (but not a factor 10).

Well, I could not verify your test results concerning bulk inserts (which has nothing to do with SQL bulk insert). Indeed, I got hardly any difference between subsequent INSERTs and INSERT followed by a FIND command (which should break the bulk inserts). Here is the code, I used:

ItemBudgetEntry.DELETEALL;
Item.FINDFIRST;
xDT := CURRENTDATETIME;
FOR i := 100000 DOWNTO 1 DO BEGIN
  ItemBudgetEntry.\"Entry No.\" := i;
  ItemBudgetEntry.INSERT;
  Item.FIND;
END;
MESSAGE(\'%1\',CURRENTDATETIME - xDT);

The messaged time spent is nearly the same with or without the Item.FIND. This is not too surprising, because according to the explanation of the bulk inserts method, it collects merely subsequent INSERTs to perform them as late as possible, but the underlying SQL commands should be identical.

Hi Kriki,
I think I made most of my comments in my own blog (http://dynamicsuser.net/blogs/admin/archive/2009/05/19/congratulations-to-mibuso-with-the-10-years.aspx) but I would like to say thanks to you and Luc for the conference. It was really great for the Dynamics Community. And I didn\\\'t know it was your first public presentation. Then you did it really good. I actually enjoyed that part a lot. But maybe it\\\'s because of my own website! :)
I look forward to visit the next Mibuso Conference.

That's a faster way but not exactly a clean way.
And considering that SQL guru's (I am following up on a lot of SQL blogs) don't even like to put the recovery model to simple and then back to full to clean the logfile....

Hi Alain,

actually a simpler way is just to delete the log file. Basically you just detach the database from SQL, delete the log file then reattach. When you reattach a small clean log file is created that you can easily manipulate and clean up.

Now the customer is live for some months and the performance is better than I expected. I think it is because they they quite a big write cache on their SAN, which probably can cache the transactionlog writes in a fast way.

Well, I can also take some video recording with my cellphone if needed.
But at Directions (both of them, actually) there is someone who takes pictures and video all the time. I'll leave doing the video's to him.
