On Win7 XP mod works fine with older Navision clients, so this is an alternative.

Also the technical upgrade is available if the client paid the maintenance fee...

So the end of the world is far from now :)

First and for all: what do you mean with "split NAV processing"?
Does it mean something like having 5 users on 8 DB's instead of 40 users in 1 DB, so he needs to buy only 5 users instead of 40?
If it is this, it means that he will have 8 DB's with in each one a company that is COMPLETELY independent of the others. So it is only useful in case you have multiple companies.
It also means that it is illegal: if you have 40 users at the same time (40 users in 1 company or 40 users divided over N companies), you need to license all of them otherwise you break the rules of the licensing.

Hi, I have a client who has seen this bloc. He is of the belief that by purchasing the addtional license granule he can split NAV processing on different databases in order to reduce license costs. your comment?

We are only using the webservice of NAS. The classic client (under the form of the NAS+JobQueue) calls the NAV webservice to do some things.

The problem happens in this case:
IF (item.Picture is disabled) AND
    (use of webservice) THEN BEGIN
  -Run indexrebuild in SQL;

  -after indexrebuild job, you have this code somewhere run by a webservice.
  tmpitem.RESET;
  tmpItem.DELETEALL(FALSE); [tmpItem is a temptable]

  => ERROR because webservice thinks that the item table has been changed (NAS and classic client don't have problems).
END;

I know you have also implemented SQL jobs to call webservices (but it came too late to be used). So we started with JobQueues. But we are considering it. Maybe we switch to it in the future.
The problem is NOT overlapping. In some cases we want it, because doing everything serially would cost too much time.

Is it just the webservice or the service tier as well?
So if you run the following in a sequence, you will get the error?

webervice
reindex
webservice (errors out)? because of blob field on item table?

I also wrote another solution for scheduling instead of NAS to use sql jobs and then you can time sql jobs in sequence and they will not overlap.

But don't be surprised if this is the last 32-bit version of SQL. Sharepoint 2010 only ships as 64-bit.

Thanks for the posting Alain.
You can achieve the same result from the command line (and without external tools) using the command:

runas /netonly /user:targetdomain\user programtorun.exe

Ciao

I remember I hadn't SIFT's in my test. I did have 1 secondary key but I don't remember if I disabled it or not in my tests.
I do remember that I ran the test more than once because I didn't expect such a big difference.

Thank you, kriki. With your setup and code (slightly modified (*1000 should be /1000, e. g.) I could reproduce an enhancement of a factor 2 to 3 by bulk inserts. But if the inserts take place on a table with secondary keys and sum index tables (like ItemBudgetEntry) there seems to be no significant performance improvement...

I am having the same error as above.
However, I noticed that I don't get the error when I log in as Administrator.

As a workaround, I run the Nav Classic Client/RTC Client "As Administrator"

It works!

Right-Click the Shortcut and Select "Run as Administrator"

I can't find the code anymore, but it was something like this (recItemLedgerEntry was not the table 32, but a new table in which I only kept the necessary fields: entry no.,posting date, location code,Item no., quantity. I also did not have indexes or SIFTS).

Well, I did the following test with NAV 5.0 and NAV 5.0 (SP1) under SQL Server 2008 Express Edition. And the result, I got really astounded me. I used the following code:

ItemBudgetEntry.DELETEALL;
COMMIT;
Item.FINDFIRST;
xDT := CURRENTDATETIME;
FOR i := 100000 DOWNTO 1 DO BEGIN
  ItemBudgetEntry."Entry No." := i;
// ok := ItemBudgetEntry.INSERT; // test with this line means no use of bulk inserts
  ItemBudgetEntry.INSERT; // test with this line means use of bulk inserts (NAV 5.0 (SP1) or higher, only!)
END;
ItemBudgetEntry."Entry No." := 0;
ok := ItemBudgetEntry.INSERT;
MESSAGE('%1',CURRENTDATETIME - xDT);

(instead of ItemBudgetEntry one can use an arbitrary Ledger Entry table)
I ran this code 5 times, either uncommenting the first line or the second.
With NAV5.0 I got the same result in each case, namely 19 sec (+/- 1 sec) - this is not too surprising.
Then I ran the same code on a NAV 5.0 (SP1) SQL Client and the results are as follows:
using bulk inserts: 20 sec (+/- 2 sec)
not using bulk inserts: 27 sec (+/- 1 sec)
These results are completely incomprehensible to me, and need to be checked again and again by as many testers as possible....

I think it is really the bulk insert that does it because this way the client and the server are not playing ping pong between the commands and thus not losing any time waiting for a message to cross the network.

Seems to be that the Item.FIND doesn't break the bulk inserts, so I changed the test. If I replace the ItemBudgetEntry.FIND by ok := ItemBudgetEntry.FIND, I get indeed a slight performance enhancement of about 20 to 25 % (but not a factor 10).

Well, I could not verify your test results concerning bulk inserts (which has nothing to do with SQL bulk insert). Indeed, I got hardly any difference between subsequent INSERTs and INSERT followed by a FIND command (which should break the bulk inserts). Here is the code, I used:

ItemBudgetEntry.DELETEALL;
Item.FINDFIRST;
xDT := CURRENTDATETIME;
FOR i := 100000 DOWNTO 1 DO BEGIN
  ItemBudgetEntry.\"Entry No.\" := i;
  ItemBudgetEntry.INSERT;
  Item.FIND;
END;
MESSAGE(\'%1\',CURRENTDATETIME - xDT);

The messaged time spent is nearly the same with or without the Item.FIND. This is not too surprising, because according to the explanation of the bulk inserts method, it collects merely subsequent INSERTs to perform them as late as possible, but the underlying SQL commands should be identical.

Hi Kriki,
I think I made most of my comments in my own blog (http://dynamicsuser.net/blogs/admin/archive/2009/05/19/congratulations-to-mibuso-with-the-10-years.aspx) but I would like to say thanks to you and Luc for the conference. It was really great for the Dynamics Community. And I didn\\\'t know it was your first public presentation. Then you did it really good. I actually enjoyed that part a lot. But maybe it\\\'s because of my own website! :)
I look forward to visit the next Mibuso Conference.

That's a faster way but not exactly a clean way.
And considering that SQL guru's (I am following up on a lot of SQL blogs) don't even like to put the recovery model to simple and then back to full to clean the logfile....

Hi Alain,

actually a simpler way is just to delete the log file. Basically you just detach the database from SQL, delete the log file then reattach. When you reattach a small clean log file is created that you can easily manipulate and clean up.

Now the customer is live for some months and the performance is better than I expected. I think it is because they they quite a big write cache on their SAN, which probably can cache the transactionlog writes in a fast way.

Well, I can also take some video recording with my cellphone if needed.
But at Directions (both of them, actually) there is someone who takes pictures and video all the time. I'll leave doing the video's to him.

You can contact them for more info. If you google for SaasPlaza you will find them (I don't have their details with me now). They will give you more info. They are also interested in finding more partners for their product.
I didn't hear about customers who are interested (at least not in Italy), maybe because they don't know the possibility. As partners I can see some interesting things also giving SaaS as a service.

Is there any document available for a Mic. partner to review the cost and profit? Are potential customers asking for partners or is saasplaza looking for partners who transfer there current customers to saas?

First check if you don't have some logshipping or other things that necessitate full recovery model. If you have, then afterwards, you have to fix those.
These are the steps I would try:
1) everyone stops working
2) make a full backup (for safety!)
3) put recovery model to simple to clean the logfile
4) create an extra logfile of 10MB.
5) Shrink the logfile (alternating between “Release unused space”, “Reorganize pages before releasing unused space with shrink file to 10MB [or lower]”. The problem is that you can’t remove the primary logfile. This would make it a lot easier.
6) Get as low as possible (in my example I arrived at 12MB).
7) grow the primary log file to a size +- like your DB and put autogrowth to false.
8) Leave the extra logfile with size of a few MB and with growth of 1GB.

Thanks for your informative blog. I’m not sure you accept questions but I’ll try. I have a vendor application using SQL 2005. The original autogrowth for the trans log was set to 1M and as the result we have now 34,000 VLF. We take hourly trans log backup. If I run DBCC SQLPERF(LOGFILE) Immediately after trans log backup the app db log still shows %used=20% (=~2GB). It never goes below 20%. DBCC OPENTRAN will say:” no open active transaction” and when I run DBCC LOGINFO very few VLF will have status=2
My questions are:
1.	If there are no open transactions and only few VLF are active why %used shows 20%?
2.	What can I do to get rid of the huge amount of VLF and start the log from scratch with more reasonable initial size?

I went through the same issue a short while ago.

best solution is :
- Keep the standard (in your case Italian) OS in place, and remove everything you don't need. And run defrag on the drive.
- Get the program GPARTED. Shrink the size of the OS partition to leave only about 1 gig or so free.
- Craete a new partition in the free space.
- Copy the OS install CD onto this new partition.
- Boot the old OS, and then run the install program off the other drive.
- Use Dual boot to select the OS you need.

PS as to the reasons for this. There are two prime reasons that they don't want you reinstalling a different OS.
1/ Support. They don't want people calling up to ask support for a different OS to what they have tested. (this is the BS reason that they will tell you).
2/ Spy ware/Games/Viruses etc.
Call them what you will, but virtually all Personal Computers these days come pre-installed with suites of virus and spy ware software.
These provide additional revenue streams to the hardware Vendor. So you have a 30 days trial virus installed, and get a warning that your nice new pc will self destruct in 30 days if you don't subscribe.

The vendors don't want you having a clean install, since then there is a lower chance of a sale.

It really depends on the scale of what you want to get/deliver. The presentation I did covered using the Microsoft technologies to provide application virtualisation and server virtualisation.
Virtualisation can be applied effectively at any level, I've designed and delivered and number of virtualised application environments, including NAV, so if anyone wants to pursue this kind of thing I'm happy to lend assistance.
There are a number of hosters out there now offering hosted services including NAV - some of which I've worked directly with - principally they are in mainland Europe.

I don't know companies who can. I know that Mark Brummel has some experience with virtualization for NAV.
Maybe you can post a topic in the forum to ask about it.

I don't know italian but Saggio probably translates to english as Saga. Having said that 'Gymnastics Saga' doesn't exactly sound right.

A Saga is normally a story of epic proportions. So the story of Jonah and the whale from the bible is usually called the Saga of Jonah and the whale.

just curious if you know that for each newer version if you are able to get more and more cache??

950 is also the highest I have achieved in a live environment, but I have gotten slightly higher in testing.

What I do is normally start at about 800, then increase in increments of about 10meg. Generally if you try high and start going lower then you don't get as high as if you start low and slowly increment.

It is weird as hell though isn't it. I mean it should just accept 1g no problems.

By the way I don't normally leave the cache at 950 because I have had cases where the client for some reason had to reset the server, and it would not start. In one case I then had to take the cache below 500 to get it to start, and eventually we reinstalled and went for 850.

850 does seem to be the magic number that nearly always starts, and is reliable once started.

Just a word of advice. If You are running BIG Native databases You defenitely should span the logical database over several fils on separate disks. This will give a huge increase in write performance.

Always use RAID-1. NEver ever anything else for the Natvie db.

If You wan't to learn more about this you can search the forums on www.dynamicsuser.net

Best regards

That is possible, I know that with previous versions, the limit was even less, but some customers had a license that superated the limit of that version, but also without support.

For me, the biggest advantage of running something on VPC is the "Undo Changes" function. You can do your entire demo, posting invoice, messing up settings, installing sh*t ... and the, turn of the VPC and undo everything you've done ... .

Jörg (just copied your name from your comment :-) ),
It was also for me a pleasure to meet you after so many years online.

At regular times, I make a image copy of my laptop’s harddisk, using TrueImage. When booted from a CD which contains the program, it can copy the whole disk (or partitions) to an external USB disk.

In case something goes seriously wrong with your system, you can have it back in no time.
