As mentioned here, my blog has moved.
Because of the fact that many things are not in place yet (like the Microsoft Community that still has to link up with the new location), allow me to post this reference to my new blogpost on www.waldo.beabout the topic above.  You can find the actual article here:

Some of you already noticed: if you go to www.waldo.be, you get a new look&feel for “waldo’s blog”.
Why?
Well, not that I didn’t like my old blogging location. Really! I have been blogging at DUG from the start! From April 1st, almost 6 years ago (djeez .. I’m getting old). Not a single month did pass without one of more blogs.. . You don’t do that when you don’t like the platform.
I would like to thank Erik Ernst (the DUG Godfather) from the bottom of my heart for having me there!
You still didn’t say why?
Well, for a few reasons.
First of all controlling reasons. I wasn’t able to admin/control my blog when I wanted. I wanted to change themes, upgrade, change RSS stuff (I only get 15 items…), have a media library/downloads, easier posting including pictures, choose custom plugins whenever I want (like polls, …), … .
Second was the software: I have a blog, and the number one blogging software (we all know) is Wordpress. There is no secret there.. . Community server does his thing, but Wordpress is just so much better. Although I must say, it definitely isn’t faster .. .
Some of you have noticed that I have been posting on mibuso as well. That was more of a tryout for me. It got me to know Wordpress, but I have the same “issues” (which is a far too harsh word for it) there: not admin, not control, .. (may be at that time “no knowledge..”). That makes it a third reason: blogging to two sites doesn’t make much sense.
And then of course, there are other reasons: my layout was so bad that I got hate-mails from people (yes Kurt, you!
). Furthermore, don’t know if you noticed, but I used my domain name “waldo.be” and by URL forwarding attached it to my DUG blog. That didn’t work well .. You weren’t able to comment, log in or whatever.. .
What are you going to do?
Well, from this day, I will switch to my new webhosting that I’ve linked to my www.waldo.be domain. One place, all under my control. If it doesn’t work: I am to blame!
Consequences
There are a few consequences though.
This is the last post in Mibuso and DynamicsUser. You won’t get any updates anymore there. I have been thinking of still doing so, but in a way, that doesn’t make much sense, does it?
So if you were “following” me through email, and you would still like to get mails from my posts, then I recommend to subscribe to my new blog .. There is something like this on my blog where you can do so..
If you did the same with RSS, there is a new RSS feed.
Still struggling
I’m not completely satisfied yet with the blog though. Mainly with performance. So if you see the theme changing a couple of times (I think it’s due to performance, but I’m not sure) .. that’s probably the reason.
I’m also searching for a way to get all my old posts into this blog. But that doesn’t seem to be so easy. I did an import of the RSS feed, but that only gives me 15 posts.. . I’m thinking of re-publishing the posts, or something like that. Anyway, my old blog(s) will be online for a while, I hope, so you can search for content there as well.. .
Contact me!
Really, any kind of freedback is appreciated. I made sure there is a contact form on the site, for you to give feedback as much as you like.

This day started out a little bit disappointing: I should have had a meeting with my PRS buddies today (Mark, Gary and Vjeko), but things got cancelled due to sickness :(.
BUT
When I arrived at the office, I was reminded of an informal “promise” that was made: that the Belgian localization of NAV2013 would be available on the 1st of February.
AND YES IT IS!
Which (probably) means that (some group 2) countries are releasing their localizations … which is superb news! This is the current list (you can find the up-to-date list here):
Enjoy!

Support engineer “Zeeshan” pointed my attention to this Team Blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/nav/archive/2013/01/28/microsoft-dynamics-nav-2013-compatiblity-with-microsoft-windows-8-and-microsoft-windows-server-2013.aspx.
I just decided to “copy” the blog to give it somewhat more attention ;-).
Note that Microsoft has finished the procedure to be able to say that both Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 R2 and Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 are compatible with Microsoft Windows Server 2012 and Microsoft Windows 8.
Enjoy!
Ps, here you can find the complete System Requirements for Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013.

Finally a new release of “the list”. Not an easy one once again, especially because about all the KB articles of this year are not accessible (at least not for me…). So this is not a complete list. I’ve sent the problem to Microsoft, and hope to have an updated list soon.
In the meanwhile, I’ve based myzelf on the Overview of Released Platform Hotfixes for Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013. although, that list is not correct, though, as it shows the same build for all the errors that were solved :-/. As you can see .. Maintaining a list like this is a challenge ;-). I corrected it..
For NAV2013, I would like to point your attention to the following KB article 2771000: “The application objects unexpectedly contain Microsoft internal change log comments in localized versions”. This means: if you’re upgrading your product or customer .. You’ll spare lots of work if you import these objects first, before you start your merge-process.
To end with, I found KB2790672 quite interesting as well. Many people and products rely on the fact to be able to use temp (buffer) as much as they want, as these do not have to be included in the license. Build 34064 is going to solve that for you.. .

For those who don’t know already .. With DDC I mean “Dutch Dynamics Community“. Tonight, once again, I decided to defy the bad weather .. to go to the session that Per Mogensen was doing about “Upgrading Best Practices”. It’s always nice to gain insight on that .. because let’s be honest .. NAV2013 is a hot topic .. so upgrading to it is as well. I was told that the recording of Per’s session will be on the website of the DDC asap. I strongly recommend you to download and watch it, as it contains quite some tips and tricks you want to know.
I would like to share just a few touch points already :-). But before I start, just wanted to share that I really love the DDC sessions: down-to-earth, to-the-point, perfectly put together, nice atmosphere. As the BDC is “sleeping” at the moment, I’m glad there is the DDC to “satisfy my hunger” to NAV community (if that’s an expression at all) ;-).
Why upgrade to NAV?
Always a good question. It’s never good to upgrade “just for the heck of it” , is it ;-). Well, one of the better remarks here was the huge improvement regarding performance. Per explained that the caching has improved a lot about performance: instead of reading the G/L Setup about 200 times in a posting routine, it’s going to read it only once .. going from about 1200 SQL transactions to about 480 in 2013 is absolutely great!
Another remark I liked, was .. It’s future-proof. Upgrading from this version on is going to be simple for future versions. This is obviously speculation .. but then again, it makes sense: the basics are there now .. finished and as we like it.
Headaches
A few things in the “old versions” will cause you the amount of headaches you really won’t appreciate… . One of it is “Dimensions”. While Dimension changes were great nevertheless .. This has involved quite some changes in code throughout the entire application. You will going to have to take that into account!
In the same list, we’re obviously also thinking of: Costing, Warehouse Mgt, Item Tracking (of course .. ), … .
What about Forms?
We all know by now that the classic stack has disappeared. So Forms, Classic reports, … are gone! This means: forms will have to be transformed to pages. And you have a few approaches for that:
- Full transformation: means a huge setup, but you’re sure you didn’t forget anything
- Recode in pages: means you’ll have to do a lot of testing, to see if you got everything and everything is still working
- Or mixed: this one I like: just transform as much as you can, and start from that as a base version .. .
But in any case .. no forms anymore! :-).
I heard that Reports are no problem at all .. Is that right?
Uhm .. how do I bring this most gently.
No, seriously, you have to keep in mind that you’ll have to seriously manage your reporting, especially when you’re still do your reporting in classic. But also for those who already turned to RDLC: there are still a few points to think about, with a main thing that was mentioned: Microsoft also changed the basic reports. This is good, but if you also changed these reports, upgrading is next to impossible, as there seems to be no good way to be merging these huge text objects .. .
But this doesn’t have to be a problem “per se”: there are new possibilities now. I’m thinking of:
- Jet Reports Express
- Odata
- Query
- Web Services
- PowerPivot
- …
And a way to trigger what reports are actually used at a customer. So only do those things you really have to do, and reconsider whether “reports” is the right platform/way to do it. E.g. you might want to replace some reports with PowerPivots, based on Odata.. .
Other stuff?
Sure, a lot, but again, watch the DDC website for the recording. A few points to mention (really have to go to sleep now..):
- NST is not running as a user anymore, so some stuff is somewhat more difficult. One example is File Handling, but other stuff, like OCX/Automation .. or the lack of it .. You’ll have to deal with
- The OnReport.. Trigger only runs in the classic environment. So unfortunately, there is no way to get Report-Usage-Statistics on RTC reports
The script?
To conclude, let’s just share the few steps you’ll need to upgrade:
- Upgrade database to NAV 2009 R2. Also make your database available where NAV2013 will be able to see it (Win2008/SQL2008).
- Import Upgrade Step 1 objects in NAV 2009 R2. Be sure to take the right (localized) fob!
- Import DEV license
- Run Step 1 data upgrade in all companies
- Delete all objects except tables
- Connect to database from NAV2013 and run data upgrade
- Import merged NAV2013 merged objects
- Compile all
- Setup NST
- Import Upgrade Step 2 objects
- Run Step 2 data upgrade in all companies
- Run Dimensions upgrade with SQL Scripts
Now, I’m going to sleep .. as tomorrow, I’ll have another Per-day: going through his Mergetool :-).

Before you think I give you the Oracle with this article … this is actually nothing but showing you a new feature in NAV2013.
New?
Not really .. but that’s how Microsoft tells it :-). It wasn’t there in NAV2009 RTC .. so it must be new, right? Well, not really .. because we already had this in the classic for years .. but it wasn’t “ported” to the RTC in NAV2009.
OnAfterGetCurrRecord is BACK!
I hear you thinkin’ .. Oh yeah!
A few weeks ago, I actually needed this in a NAV2013 project. I needed a “programmable” linked factbox, which contained records with a generic link, using RecordID. Let’s say something like the table “Record Links”. Suppose you’ve got a table like that, and want a factbox on any page to show the linked records of your table.
In a nutshell: I want a programmable linked factbox.
And that’s fairly easy. It’s just a matter of creating a function in your factbox that is going to take care of the filtering. Call this function “OnAfterGetCurrRecord” and that’s about it:
Step 1: Create a factbox with a function to update your records
Like you see below, I created a new factbox on the “Record Link” table with two fields and the function which is going to take care of the filtering, based on the record ID. Not the “CurrPage.UPDATE”, which is going to be necessary to refresh your factbox after filtering..
Step 2: Use your factbox, and call the function OnAfterGetCurrRecord:
To be able to call a function on your factbox, you’ll have to name your factbox in (in my case) the Customer List page.. As you can see, I named it “RecLinkFactbox”.
The code for your filtering can be as complex as you want it to be .. but of course .. keep “performance” in the back of your mind.
Speaking of which
One of the things we (as developers) always have to manage when doing these kind of things, are things like: “what if I don’t show my factbox .. is it still going to call that function and do the filtering in the background?”. Of course it does! And you SHOULD manage that .. and we actually can do that quite easily.
But that’s for the next blogpost …
If you want to read up on the OnAfterGetCurrRecord trigger .. here is a good place to start: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd301413(v=nav.70).aspx

I have a nice Holiday-present to share with you (at least for Belgians).
The application of the changes that I talked about here, are postponed to the 1st of January 2014! It is however permitted to apply these new regulations already in 2013 … but you’re not obligated to do so.. (I can hardly imagine anyone is able to..).
Although I have to give you one small warning: please stay aware this is still a probability and not fully official (as it was stated to me). As far as I’m aware, it hasn’t been officially published yet.
In any cae .. I’ve got the promise from Microsoft that they keep on working on a solution that supports these new regulations - so we might get it in time this time :-).
A very late Merry Christmas and an early Happy New Year!

Oh yeah, here we go again. Belgium is one of the smallest countries worldwide .. while it is TOP 5 in paying taxes .. . It took about 600 days to form our new government .. but it only took that government less than half of that time to develop (again!) new VAT rules. On the 29th of November 2012, the new law was approved, and is active from the 1st of January 2013. Obviously, this has an impact yet again on the Dynamics NAV Localization for Belgium.
It’s starting to become depressing … as Per would say: “Move to a bigger country !”. If that was an option….
Anyway
It’s mainly about “Billing” and “exigibility” .. . Too bad I didn’t find an English description about the changing regulations, but here you can find a Dutch text that can get the Flemish people going and thinking of the topic.
I can confirm that Microsoft is already on top of this .. and that I have an unconfirmed statement that the Belgian so-called-government is aware of the fact that it’s too late for any software to be able to comply … so they are working on a “transition arrangement” (if that’s how it’s called in English anyway..). But again: this hasn’t been confirmed!
I have the feeling this isn’t the last post about this subject.. .

When you’re a partner .. you deal with databases of your customers, right? At least - you should ;-). Usually, there is “some” security set up at the customers site. At least let’s hope so ;-).
It might happen that you want to copy a customer’s database to your site, just to test, debug, do extra development, test why that MRP won’t run, do nasty things, .. you know .. do partner stuff.
What many of us do, is: take a backup of that database (or company) and restore it locally in the office. Problem is: there is security set up in that database, so there is no way to get in, even after a restore, we get this:
In NAV2009, we had the chance (at least in the native restore) to reset the security immediately after the restore, but in NAV2013, we first have to be able to log into the database in RTC to be able to set up security. So there’s no obvious “bridge” anymore that we can take.. .
How do we force ourselves into that DB?
Your first guess would be .. thinking of NAV2013 and all the new great features in it …
Powershell!
That would be a safe bet, wouldn’t it? In NAV2013, you have all these great new Cmdlets at your disposal …
And as you can see .. you can set up security. My guess would be: let’s add myself into the system.
So, first, I look up my sid in a normal command shell (not powershell) with
wmic useraccount get name,sid
I copy the Sid I want, go back to Powershell, and do this:
New-NAVServerUser TestFBKRestore -sid MyCopiedSid
The result is somewhat disappointing .. but understandable:
You obviously need access to be able to add users.. .
What about SQL Server?
We all know the trick in the old days to reset security straight on SQL Server - deleting the content of certain tables… Well .. may be it’s also possible in NAV2013.
I think it’s safe to assume that the person who is trying to restore that database, is sysadmin on the SQL Server where it’s restoring the database. Well, run this script on your new database:
delete
from
[dbo].[User]
delete
from
[dbo].[Access Control]
delete
from
[dbo].[User Property]
And you’ll see you’ll be able to get back in :-). In fact .. It’s even better to clear a few more tables, just for deleting redundant data
delete
from
[dbo].[Page Data Personalization]
delete from
[dbo].[User Default Style Sheet]
delete from
[dbo].[User Metadata]
delete from
[dbo].[User Personalization]
Hope it’s useful for you.
And of course .. If you have comments or a better way .. I definitely want to know! Leave a comment :-).
