It there a way or a property that controls the quick search on an item. When entering a sales order or purchase order the item drill down shows No., Description, Base Um, Price and the options for advanced and new. Instead of Advanced I would just like to add Vendor Item No. to the initial search and set that field as my default filter column.

For you scenario add the vendor Item no. as key to the item table and then by following above steps you can add it to the dropdown list. Here is one more link how to add to the list and set to default filter
