While developing in Navision® Solutions [1] sometimes serious moments occur when one object is opened several times and the wrong object is saved last. In a single user environment as well as in a network environment this often results in the loss of work.
Window Watcher monitors the windows that are opened. It can detect multiple opened client windows in Navision® Solutions [1] and notify the users.
[1]: formerly known as "Navision® Financials"
The full product Window Watcher has many benefits compared to this "light" version. It works in a network environment with multiple users and so it can detect objects that are opened on different computers at the same time.
More about the full product version as well as latest releases of the light version can be found here: http://home.foni.net/~michael-weigand/winwatch.html
Window Watcher runs with Windows 95 or newer versions including Windows 2000. The first release of Windows 95 contains a file OLEAUT32.DLL which has to be updated by a newer version. This can be done with installing the Internet Explorer 3.0 or newer for example.
A screen resolution with a color depth of 16 bit is recommended.
Note: It is recommended to close Window Watcher when CD writing software is running.
Note: Window Watcher had not been tested on Windows ME, but should work fine with it as well.
Window Watcher monitors the opened client windows of Navision® Solutions. The captions of the opened windows are displayed in a tiny window that is permanently visible.
When a window caption of an object opened for design is listed more than once the according entries are displayed in a different color. In addition an alarm signal can notify the user. This lets the user react so he can close the unwanted windows.
Other features
At the very first start Window Watcher will show a dialog for selecting the language. This version supports English and German. The selected language for Window Watcher is independend from the language of Navision® Solutions.
Later the language can be selected in the main menu.
The caption of the Window Watcher dialog works quite the same as the caption of the Navision® Solutions parent window. The caption displays the company name only when client windows (Main Menu, Object Designer, objects opened for design or whatsoever) are opened.
File/Quit
The program Window Watcher will be terminated.
Note: The dialog can be closed using the close botton or the system menu in the caption bar or simply with the Escape or Return keys. Only File/Quit will quit the program.
Extra/Start
minimized
With this option active the program starts without displaying its
main dialog window. You can access the main dialog by clicking on
the small icon that is displayed on the right hand side of the
taskbar.
Extra/Always
on top
With this option active the main dialog window will be displayed
on top of all other windows.
Deutsch
Changes the language to German.
English
Changes the language to English.
Character
sequence
Window Watcher identifies the program to be monitored by a
character sequence as part of the programs main window caption.
The character sequence is case sensitive, e.g.. '- Navi' or
'vision'. Window Watcher will work with the topmost program if
more than one program is opened.
Current
company
The name of the company that's being monitored. The current
company is also displayed in the caption of the Window Watcher
dialog as well as in the tooltip of the taskbar icon.
Log
opened objects
With this option enabled Window Watcher writes information about
opened objects to the specified file. This file can be imported
with a Dataport into Navision® Solutions or other programs to
verify which objects were accessed during development. The file
contains these fields:
Computername, Company, Object, Name, Type, ID, Date, Time
Only the topmost object listed in the window list will be written to the logfile. Object, Name, Type, ID will be empty when no object is opened for design.
Note: This feature does not affect how Window Watcher detects multiple opened objects.
Show
the log file
The log file will be displayed using the program that is
associated with TXT files (usually Notepad.exe).
Arrange
windows
In order to use the work space efficiently Window Watcher can
arrange some windows:
Note: The Toolbox and the Field Menu will always stay on top of other windows. So the Field Menu may hide the Main Menu and the Properties window while it is visible.
Update
interval (seconds)
This is the interval for refreshing the window list and
exchanging data over the network. A value of 2 seconds has proved
to be useful.
Alarm
signal
With this option active the speaker gives an alarm signal when
multiple opened objects are detected.
Font
for the list window
Allows the selection of a font for the list window. The three
available fonts are 'MS Sans Serif 8pt', 'Small Fonts 7pt' and
'Small Fonts 6pt'. The last two fonts are intended to keep the
list window small.
Dynamic
font size
With this option enabled Window Watcher changes the font size
depending on the number of displayed lines. By default the font
site 8pt will be used. The next smaller font size will be
selected, when the number of displayed lines equals or exceeds
the values of the fields '7pt' and '6pt'.
Color
selection for the list window
This allows the selection of colours for entries in the list
window. Different colors for windows that are opened once and
windows that are opened more than once can be selected. In
addition the normal color can be set to indicate local work or
network operation.
Show
parent windows
With this option enabled the list of opened parent windows will
be shown unless one or more client windows are detected. The
number of opened parent windows is shown next to the checkbox.
Show
client windows
With this option enabled the list of client windows of the
program that is to be monitored are shown. In network operation
client windows from other computers can also be shown. The number
of opened client windows is shown next to the checkbox.
Show
objects names shortened
With this option enabled the names of objects opened for design
are shown shortened in the list window. As a result the width of
the list window will be reduced.
Some examples:
The name of the object | How it is displayed in the list window |
Codeunit 397 Mail - C/AL Editor | Codeunit 397 Mail |
Report 706 Status - Report Designer | Report 706 Status |
Detecting
forms opened for design - New!
Depending on your version of Navision® Solutions the form
designer displays a specific string in the caption. The caption
either ends with '- Form Designer' or with '- Formular Designer'.
It is important to select the proper string, otherwise Window
Watcher can't detect multiple opened forms.
This tab shows some information about your copy of the program.
The list window is the tiny window that shows the list of opened windows. This window is displayed on top of all other windows and therefore it is always visible. Windows that are opened once are displayed in a different color that windows that are opened multiple times.
